U-boat U 9 awarded in entirety with the Iron Cross at the Tower

The U-boat “U 9” was awarded in entirety with the Iron Cross and had permission to do this at the Tower. In the second world war the U-9 and the SMS Emden continue the tradition.

This emblem of the WWII U-9 honours Otto Weddigen’s famous U-9 of WWI. After sinking three cruisers “before breakfast” in the first major submarine victory in history, thus proving the U-boat as a weapon of war, Weddigen was awarded the Iron Cross, which he then put on the conning tower of U-9.
