The Friedrich-August-Cross was created on 24 September 1914 by Grand Duke Friedrich August for officers, NCOs and men as well as other persons of the Grand Duchy and those who were close to the founder and his country in a close relationship as a war award in two classes, where the II. class could also be awarded to those left at home – then to a band in “wrong” colours. The design of the cross came from the aide-de-camp of the Grand Duke, Colonel of Jordan. Until the end of 1918 a total of 6900 pieces were delivered to the Order Chancellery.
